Despite the lack of blog posting, I have been making progress decorating around my house. The biggest improvement has been painting the dining room! Yet another room in the house that required eradicating the Builder’s Blah Brown. I decided to stay with the gray theme of the FamNookEn (Family Room, Breakfast Nook, Kitchen) and paint the dining room the same color, Gentle Rain by Behr. Simply put, I’m loving the fresh feel of the light gray and the contrast it has with all the dark stained wood in our house.
You can see in this pic the color of the walls contrasted with the dark stained fireplace and shelving, dark hardwood floors – which are also in the dining room – and also how it compliments the blue painted kitchen table.
Embarrassing side note – it is now almost Christmas – I painted the dining room before Halloween. Why am I telling you this? Well, because the decorations in my pictures are from Halloween – and not Christmas. Oops! That is what I get for not posting this on time! In addition, you can thank my 11 year old daughter for this post – as she prompted me to make time, sit down, and write! This was the convo:
My husband: “I wonder what style house they are going to build there?” (referring to a house being built near ours) “Do you think we could go to the builder’s website and see what they build? Maybe floor plans?”
Me: “We could try, but builder’s around here don’t update their websites very often.”
My daughter: “Oh, kind of like you don’t update your blog?”
So back to the dining room…two months later…
Our dining room has a pretty trey ceiling with beautiful angles and trim detail. I love this feature, but with all the brown it really was unnoticed. I needed something that would draw the eye up towards the ceiling. If you remember, I originally bought this wallpaper with the intent of putting it in the trey ceiling inset. However quickly realized that my ceilings are textured and there would be no way this wallpaper would stick without me scraping off the texture. And, although that would be very doable, I decided it was not a project I wanted to tackle.
I ended up putting the wallpaper on the entry stairwell. Since the dining room is to the right of the entry, I decided to paint the ceiling inset a pretty blue color that would coordinate with the wall paper and pull the two spaces together. As a bonus, the blue also coordinates with the kitchen table and coffee table I painted. This, my friends, is what I call “Design Love”…when all the spaces start flowing together in blissful harmony. Aahhh.
I began by removing as much as possible from the dining room and dove into the painting. I began by painting the walls, two coats of the Gentle Rain. I also did part of the ceiling in the same color, leading up to the trey ceiling. After I was done with that, I did the back breaking (neck breaking) part of painting the ceiling. I chose Rocky Mountain Sky by Behr, for the color. Two coats later it was done!
Wow!! Isn’t it so much brighter? It just feels more soothing to me. It is a room I want to be in! Here is another view looking towards the window…
I went ahead and hung the same blue draperies up. They are a deeper shade of the Rocky Mountain Sky painted in the ceiling. They are also the same shade of blue from the wallpaper on the entry stairwell. You can see that here…
I love how the blue in the ceiling picks up on the blue wallpapered stairwell. These pics really don’t do it justice.
This pic looks towards the kitchen. You can see my silver tray focal wall better. Here is a close up of it…
I love the vintage feel of the silver trays hung on the wall. It is just so elegant and adds a ton of character to the space! Below them I have an Ikea console table turned into a mini wine bar. It holds a few bottles of wine, my fun decorative wine glasses, wine charms, opener, and monogrammed napkins too. The picture in the frame is a wine themed free printable I made a while back. You can still get it here.
Overall, I am super thrilled with my newly painted dining room! I love the feel it has and the design direction the whole house is headed in. Now, I do still have some plans for the room. I would like a new carpet with blue in it. I’m also considering painting the dining room table – white, gray – I can’t decide! But definitely some more updating is coming.
